‘Origines’ 2020
Chardonnay & Pinot Noir, Côte des Bar, Champagne, France
A mineral-forward, politely intense and umami-embraced BRAND NEW to Ontario grower champagne from GW Imports! We were stunned by the precision & FORCE of these zero-zero (or additive free!) teeny-tiny batch Champagnes, and are THRILLED to bring them to you. Salima and Alain Cordeuil’s organic four hectares are sitting pretty in the village of Noé les Mallets, in the elevated, southern Côte des Bar sub-region of Champagne. Their work is gentle, extremely low-intervention and explores the possibilities of regionally synonymous grapes through full phenolic ripeness and extended lees aging. A brut nature, ‘Origines’ is a blend of 65 year-old plush, mineral and citric chardonnay (65%) and earthy, spiced pinot noir (35%) grown on calcareous-clay, direct-pressed and aged in neutral oak for many, many moons. Smoky limestone reduction, almond butter thumbprint cookie, sake-esque mushroom-iness, light green bitters, pomelo rind, country rye blend loaf, sweet anise, noble acidity that charges forward ready to do battle, a bog, a gold digging stream, mossy and muddy, pumpkin, salty sweat, silken bubbles & sweet corn. The ultimate autumnal champagne, enjoy alongside anything topped with first of the season shaved porcinis.
