Bastardo AKA Trousseau, Douro, Portugal

Rita Ferreira Marqués trained all over the world before returning to her family estate to “make wine without stereotypes” meaning this isn’t your big-shouldered Spanish red! Bastardo, or Trousseau as it’s better known in the Jura, comes from 50 year old vines and is foot-trodden and fermented with the stems, spending 10 months in stainless steel. Pours surprisingly pale in the glass with a spicy aromatic punch — cranberry cocktail, cherry pie filling, grenadine, savoury green herbs, rose petals & tomato leaf with a touch of clove. Incredibly versatile with food, pair this with spicy seafood paella or squid ink pasta, this wine doesn’t shy away from big flavours!
