‘Circo Pobre’

‘Circo Pobre’

País, Itata Valley, Chile

An earthy, smoky and zero-zero, honest-as-they-come, vintage in a bottle.  Brand new-to-Ontario producer from Grapes Witch Imports, welcome La Basilona! Beginning in 2021, Basile l’Archimandrite’s delightful project is all about creating delicious, terroir-centric wines from the fruit of only the happiest n’ healthiest vines in Chile’s Itata Valley. ‘Circo Pobre’ is made from 200-year-old (!!!) país grown on poor, sandy granitic soils, which saw three months of skin-contact in neutral steel tank before being pressed for an additional nine months, also in tank, getting ready for opening night. FUN FACT! A light smoke taint is present due to a fire nearby the vineyard, but really feels truly in place in the context of this rough n’ rich red, giving a Pacina 'Toscana Rosso’-esque vibe we’re INTO! FUN FACT! “Circo Pobre” means “poor circus”, and is a reference to having to do everything at the winery oneself, cultivate the vineyard, make the wine, bottle it, sell it, plus the paperwork! Macademia nut butter, rubber tree in a monkey filled jungle, fermenting cacao beans, cinnamon bark, chalk & craggy black rock tannins, like the shores of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula in Iceland. Pour alongside fire-charred veggies, seaweeds, elk or duck.
